Day 31 Walk30 is one year old!

Happy Halloween ... Very Spooky!

Day 31 Walk30 is one year old!

Happy first year walk30! I am thinking about my commitment to this project and so glad that walk30 came into my life.  It has been a wonderful fitness addition for me for the past 12 months of walk30 challenges. There have been times when it has been a real push to get myself out the door but I must say that as the months have rolled on it has become easier and easier and more of a habit like washing my face or brushing my teeth.
I am thinking about adding something to my walk3o daily habit for the next month of November and I am not quite sure what that might be.  Stay tuned for day 1 or the November Walk30 challenge to see how this month is just a little different.
Thank you to all of you that have walked with me over the past year!  We will Walk On Strong into the next 12 months.

Day 30 Thirty minutes of exercise better than 60?

A dedicated group of Walk On Strong walkers ... even on a stormy evening

Day 30 Thirty minutes of exercise could be better than 60? Holy Cow!

I just got my newsletter from TheGreatist.com and it had a link to a very interesting article that examines research into the duration of workouts and their benefit: News: Exercising Less May Help Us Lose More Weight

The bottom line on this research is that they found that when they asked one group of participants to exercise for 30 minutes a day and another to exercise 60 minutes a day the results were that both groups had the same resulting weight loss.

Check out this article for their take on why this might be happening when it really doesn't seem to make sense.  My take away is a little different.  I am thinking that whether the 30 minute group lost as much weight as the 60 minute group is probably not as important as the fact that it is a lot easier to fit that 30 minute workout into your life going forward it is just more doable.  If we add the fact that it could even be as or more beneficial to you physically and mentally ... HEY! That is fantastic! Now that just might keep you moving out the door for your walk30.

I am celebrating my ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY  of Walk 30 walks (in a row!) on Wednesday ... please be sure to walk with me tomorrow ... it is also a Chance to Dance Halloween class so I am having a double celebration.

Remember that you can join me in the November Walk30 Challenge (yes I am going to continue doing my Walk30 every day).

Day 29 Stormy weather challenges your walk30

I love this picture of our last Newfoundland, Tera Nova, on the deck in the fall ... you are missed

Day 29 Stormy weather challenges your walk30

It has been a very interesting day listening to the wind whip around the house and keeping an eye on the newscasts about hurricane Sandy. New York has had a great deal of damage and water surging into the city while we are feeling the wind that accompanies this storm.  All in all it has not been an inviting day for a walk of any kind.  I pulled out my Walk at Home video and did my walk30 in the rec room. Actually it was a fast paced really energetic walk!
When all else fails there is always a way to get a walk in.

Day 28 Walk 30 keeps me committed to fitness

Walking Annie near Millar Lake Ontario

Day 28 Walk 30 keeps me committed to fitness

Another day and a little bit closer to a whole year of walking30.  I must admit that getting out today was a little more challenging because the wind was cold and the rain was wet.  It seems that the fall has truly taken hold and it is making the walking habit just a little more of a commitment. Right now I am working at my computer and I can hear the rain outside the window.  The is a hurricane brewing up the eastern coast so we are in for some of the residual weather effect over the next few days.  One way or another I will get my walk30 in because the big New Year Celebration happens on Halloween! On October 31st I will have finished a year of walk30's YIPEE!!

Day 27 Ten minutes can make a difference in your health

Commit to TEN

Day 27 Ten minutes can make a difference

I was at Weight Watchers on Friday and I was there to lead a dance demo and encouage the attendees to dance along with me.  I believe most everyone had a great time as we moved our bodies to the Glee version of Thriller by Michael Jackson.  They are such an amazing group of women and men!
The point of the day was to emphasize the importance of adding even 10 minutes to your usual fitness routine.
I am a huge proponent of getting out the door for 30 minutes for your daily walk ... but if you are just beginning to try to do a little bit more exercise than nothing the best way to start is to promise yourself just 10 minutes.  The magic of ten is that if you get out the door you will most likely do more and that may well lead to a walk30 at some time in your near future.
I will be writing more about the magic of 10 but for now think about committing to a walk10 for November and the you might be walking 30 in December... who knows??

Day 26 A great day! Carpe Diem!

How time flies!

Day 26 A great day! Carpe Diem!
It is after midnight and has been quite a day getting ready to celebrate 60th Dave's birthday.
Thank you to all of our family and friends for helping us to celebrate.  After everyone left we went out for a walk30 ... it felt good  ... even in the rain. Tomorrows walk starts early!

Day 25 Happy 60th Dave

'Carpe Diem'

Day 25 Happy 60th Dave!
Today we celebrated my husband's 60th birthday!  I am blessed with not only good genes but I also married into some extraordinarily healthy people on the Lewis side of things!  I am grateful everyday that I met David Lewis at Lakehead University in 1975.  I could write a book about our adventures but I will simply say that we have had a wonderful time together and walking30 has become one of the important things that we do to stay as healthy as possible,

Here's to you Dave ... thank you for all of those amazing walks ... we had one more today ... a great way to connect after a busy and important day!

Day 24 A Special Day

My Mom and my daughter Sarah walking in Nipigon 2011

Day 24  A Special Day

Today is my Mom's birthday ... she is 86 today.  I have to say that my Mom is an inspiration.  She sings, she dances and she is a member of Sweet Adelines and has been for almost 40 years.  She has had a hand in my passion for fitness and helping others toward a longer and better quality life. She has always been interested in staying healthy and being up on all the latest ways to take care of your body and your mind.  When I was very little I remember holding on to her hand for dear life as she and walked down the street toward the bus stop that would take us down town shopping.  I also remember her doing her exercises in our living room ... and that was a time weren't too many housewives doing aerobics and strength training of any kind. My Mom still works out at home getting in her walks and she has added strength training to her routine as well.
I have been so lucky to have such a wonderful role model in my life.  Well Happy Birthday Mom and I hope that you had a great one!

Day 23 Walking in the rain

Day 23 Walking in the rain

Just a brief note about a super rainy day.  From late last night, which included thunder and lightning, there has been a full day of rain.  It is amazing how the clouds and the rain can bring your spirits down and damper any enthusiasm for a walk30.
Rain or not we headed out to Waterloo Public Square at 6:30 to join the group for an evening walk.  I was amazed and impressed to see so many walkers who came out in their rain gear!
Rain or shine we are out there walking. Walk On Strong!

Day 21 A quick walk30

Our Saturday walk was beautiful!

Day 21 A quick walk30
Today was one of those days that it seemed that time was slipping away like sand through my fingers.  First it was noon then it was 2 p.m. and then it was after 4 and I felt as though nothing had been accomplished.  I was thinking all day that it was the perfect day for a very long walk and then all I seemed to be doing was cleaning and tidying up.

I did get out with Annie before dinner for  about 15 minutes and then later I took her out again ... thank goodness for the dog.  My walk30 blog and my dog are going to turn one year at about the same time ... how cool and how appropriate!
Thank you Annie for a lot of walk30's!

Day 20 Walk On Strong!

Day 20 Walk On Strong!

We had a wonderful walk this morning ... I was with the 9 a.m. Walk On Strong group and we did the 5 K Walking Classic race route.  It was a little wet but the colors were brilliant in spite of the occasional light shower.  It was a morning that just felt perfect for a walk.
Thanks to all who came out this morning! It was a pleasure sharing a walk with you!

Day 19 walk in the rain

Walking on the Bruce Trail in Owen Sound

Day 19 Walk30 in the rain

I suppose we all have to enjoy the rain because there will soon be cold winds and snow to contend with.  We went out for our walk tonight in the dark and rain but the weather was mild and easy to take.  We always walk a little faster when the rain is falling.
So this is just a quick note to say ... I did my walk30 and now it's time to rest.

Day 18 Walking with a purpose

Day 18 Walking with a purpose

One thing I like to do is to walk from one place to another purposefully. This evening I walked over to a friends home for dinner and then walked home.  It is funny to say but I don't make that walk very often.  Usually I would drive over because it is about 2 kilometers. Why do we use our cars when our feet would do just as well?  It's a simple question but, once again, the answer becomes complicated.  I think we just feel rather time constrained as a society.  We just do not believe that we have the time to take out to walk from one place to another.

If we really don't have time then I might suggest that we need to find the time and rearrange our priorities.  When I arrived home from my walk home I called my friend to let her know that I was home safe and sound.  The first thing she said was " that was fast!" It only took me about 15 minutes to walk a distance that would normally be a drive.  Having a destination that is within 3 K would make a reasonable walk. Give it some thought and then give it a try ... you could be walking30 to the store in no time!

Day 17 Body Weight Exercises

Annie in Lake Huron!

Day 17 Body Weight Exercises

One of the routines that I am aspiring to reintroduce into my life is more weight training.  Many of us think that we have to have a gym, equipment and/or a trainer to help us with strength training.  I am certified as a strength training instructor and have a strong knowledge base and experience working with others to improve their muscular strength and at the same time I have let my own habit of strength training wander away.
The benefits of strength training can't be over stated especially for women.  We need to stay strong so that we can stay balanced and on our feet ... there is a real danger in losing muscle mass.  We need our muscle to keep us involved in life to the fullest and the statistics around falls and broken hips are a real warning to stay strong and active.   Walking 30 minutes every day will reap huge health benefits and will help you maintain your core strength among many other rewards.

Why do we find it so challenging to do what we know is good for us?  One of my answers to this question lies in the challenges we may have accessing information and finding the opportunity to fit these healthy routines into our lives.   I have found that a time saver for strength training is found in Body Weight Exercises ... I have blogged about this before and directed you to this amazing collection of exercises that has been put together by the Greatist.com website ... check them out   50 Body Weight Exercises.

If you have a little bit of time choose any of these exercises and without going to a special place or using any kind of equipment you can, with a little determination, be healthier and a stronger.

I have a list of 4 exercises that I recommend to our walking group to keep them strong.  I will share that with you here.
No matter what you do the most important thing is to get out for that walk ... but if you can add some simple strength training routines that will take you a long way toward a better quality future!
Here are my favorite 4 body weight exercises!

Strength Training for Walkers

A simple workout that can be done every other day to improve strength and muscle mass. No equipment is required and it takes less than 20 minutes

BENT KNEE PUSH UPS Start with your hands and knees on a mat. Your hands should be shoulders-width apart and your head, neck, hips and legs should be in a straight line. Do not let your back arch and cave in. Maintain a slight bend in the elbows. Lower your upper body by bending your elbows outward, stopping before your chest touches the floor. Contracting the chest muscles, slowly return to the starting position. Inhale while lowering your body. Exhale while returning to the starting position. After mastering this exercise, you may wish to try the full push-up.

LUNGE (with or without weights) Stand straight with your feet together. Hold your arms down at your sides. Step forward with the right leg and lower the left leg until the knee almost touches the floor. Contracting the quadriceps muscles (front of the thigh), push off your right foot, slowly returning to the starting position. Alternate the motion with the left leg to complete the set. Inhale while stepping forward. Exhale while returning to the starting position. The step should be long enough that your left leg is nearly straight. Do not let your knee touch the floor. Make sure your head is up and your back is straight. Your chest should be lifted and your front leg should form a 90-degree angle at the bottom of the movement. Your right knee should not pass your right foot, and you should be able to see your toes at all times. If you have one leg that is more dominant than the other, start out with the less dominant leg first. Discontinue this exercise if you feel any discomfort in your knees.

WALKING LUNGE This move is similar to the lunge but instead of bringing your leg back from the forward lunge position you will bring the back leg forward to lunge with the opposite leg. You will be talking giant lunge steps using the same technique as above. 10 lunge steps at a time and repeat 2 or 3 times

PLANK for a strong core The plank exercise is a great way to build endurance in both the abs and back, as well as stabilizer muscles. To do it right: Lie face down on mat resting on the forearms, palms flat on the floor.

Push off the floor, raising up onto toes and resting on the elbows.
Keep your back flat, in a straight line from head to heels.
Tilt your pelvis and contract your abdominals to prevent your rear end from sticking up in the air.
Hold for 20 to 60 seconds, lower and repeat for 3-5 reps.

Day 16 Half way through the Challenge

Walking in group makes all the difference in the world!

Day 16 Half way through the Challenge

Just one day at a time does it.  If you can get through the day and know that you have gotten out the door then all is well and you are on track to success.
I am always optimistic about Tuesdays because it is the Walk On Strong Group walk night and the walking just gets done when you are in a group.

Tonight was a great night for walking because the weather was cool but not too cool and the walking just warms everyone one up. There were lots of walkers out tonight and a good walk was had by all.
Find a group to walk with and your goals will be met with ease!

Day 15 Walking 30 minutes can improve your mood

Lion's Head on Friday October 12 ... beautiful!

Day 15 Walking 30 minutes can improve your mood

Today was a very busy day and it seemed busier because it was also the first day back from a holiday away from home.  At times it is just necessary to tune out all of those things that you would rather be doing and just buckle down and do what needs to be done.  Today was one of those days for me.  There was a constant pace all day until about 7 p.m.   When I got home the first thing I wanted to do was head out the door for a walk30.  It just felt refreshing to walk ... not thinking too much ... just walking along with the dog ( who also needed a walk30 ) and unwinding.
I remember so many times in the past that I came home from a busy day and I just wanted to lie on the couch or watch some mindless show on TV or .... pretty much anything aside from exercising.
I am thankful for my walk30 habit because it is a much better plan than the old one!
If you want to change your mood take it for a walk30 ... give it a try tomorrow.

Day 14 Heading home

yippee ... nothing like a good swing!!

Day 14 Heading home

We cleaned up and headed home this morning from our get away long weekend.  It might have been a rainy but it didn't really put a damper on our holiday or our walking.  Last night we headed out into the rain with a mega flashlight because it was PITCH BLACK ... I mean you really couldn't see your hand in front of your face! Dripping wet and we were out there walking30 ... exactly 30 minutes because it was enough. The amazing thing was that it was kind of fun being out in the elements when most people would never even think of being out there ... it is good to feel that you are doing the unexpected.

The picture above is one of my favorites from our Bruce Peninsula getaway ... I found a swing by the marina at Lion's Head ... I always loved to swing in the park as a child and fortunately we really don't change that much!

Day 13 Walking30 away from home!

Beckon performing at Rachel's Cafe in Lion's Head

Day 13 Walking30 away from home!

We are sitting in Rachel's Cafe in Lion's Head and being entertained by the duo 'Beckon' ... and they are amazing.  They call their sound acoustic pop and it feels somewhat like folk but with more of a pop edge.  They have a wonderful blend of two light clear voices and are obviously talented songwriters too.  We came in for breakfast and were lucky enough to have this added entertainment ... you couldn't ask for more if you were in a club in Toronto.
I am not sure I can top this for a great thing to blog about on Day 13 but I should also mention that on our way to breakfast at Rachel's we stopped off at a organic bakery on the side of the road that was very interesting. In addition to baking that made you want to gobble it all up they had a trail that is filled with sculptures made of natural elements.
Organic Bakery and outdoor wonderland of sculpted creatures
So we haven't even seen noon yet and we have already had a full day of adventure.  There will still be a walk30 (plus) today and we will be sure to get Annie in the water one more time.  I will report on all that tomorrow but for now I will close my computer and enjoy the sounds and songs of Beckon.
Hope your day has a little adventure attached.

Day 11 and 12 Walking in the Bruce!

Day 11 and 12 Walking in the Bruce!

It was a rainy day yesterday and the wind was howling but it didn't really slow us down.  We are up here at a friend's cottage for a few days and some R&R after the hectic pace of the Minds In Motion KW Walking Classic.

We arrived in the rain and it continued with the occasional downpour throughout Thursday.  We choose to just head out and pray that we didn't get caught in a soaking wet rain.  Our luck held up for an hour and we had a fabulous walk along the roads that encircle Millar Lake.

Dave has this rule that you have to touch the stop sign at the end of the road(?)
We awoke this morning to a sunny day!   WHile I was working on a report in the cottage Dave got Annie out into the lake ... she loved it.
After lunch we headed to Lion's Head and Rachel's Bakery and Cafe.  There we found a wi-fi connection and an amazing lunch. I should have taken a picture but .... ooops ... all gone!  YUM!
We both have some things to catch up on with our computers and then we will be heading back to the cottage for a good long walk.
Hopefully I will get to a computer wi-fi connection tomorrow ... if not I will catch you up on Sunday.
Hope you have a great walk30 today.

Day 10 Walking30 in the neighborhood

Day 10 Walking30 in the neighborhood

Not much to report today ... just one of those days where I needed to get out the door and I just did it!
Walking around the neighborhood isn't the most interesting of walks but we are lucky to have a wooded area near by to enjoy and more than a few hills.
Sometimes we just have to keep it simple and get out there.
Hope you had a great walk30 today!

Day 8 Happy Thanksgiving! (in Canada!)

View from the Bruce trail in Owen Sound

Day 8 Happy Thanksgiving! (in Canada!)

According to Wikipedia
On Thursday, January 31, 1957, the Canadian Parliament proclaimed:
“    A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed – to be observed on the 2nd Monday in October.

If you're Canadian you are most likely feeling a little like a stuffed turkey today ... but you are also a little better rested and possibly feeling a little more thankful for something in your life that makes it better.   I am thinking about the fact that I was able to get out a walk down the Grand River Trail with one of my friends and my dog Annie.  It was a truly spectacular autumn day today.  The sun was warm and the sky a clear blue which made the turning leaves look like a blast of color.

I am especially thankful for my Walk30 Challenge Project this year.  Every month since November 2011 I have made a promise to myself to walk 30 minutes a day every single day of the month (mostly 30 day increments ... give or take).  At the beginning of the next month it would all begin again and as I have walked along I have also blogged along.  I have written a blog every day with the exception of the days I was unable to get connected to an internet site and then I would just catch up the next day.  I will soon have 365 blogs under my keyboard and I will have been walking a year.  I have a feeling that there are a few of you out there that are walking30 along with me and for that I am truly excited.  I was up in Owen Sound this past weekend visiting my wonderful friends Elaine and Uwe (Artists from Around the Sound) and I was reminded of the change that simply walking30 can make in your life.  Elaine has been walking30 with me all year almost to the day and she truly feels that her life has changed.  She is going to write me her story and I will post it on the blog ... so keep posted.
So I am cruising toward year #1 of my walk30 challenge!! It will happen on Halloween actually and you will hear a huge "YIPEE!" when the hour strikes 12 on Wednesday the 31st of October.

So here in Canada on Thanksgiving weekend I am grateful for a great many things and not the least of which is the walking habit that I have come to embrace and the people I have moved toward the same habit. It is never too late to start walking30.

Day 7 Walking30 in cottage country

The fall is color ... enjoy it this weekend

Day 7 Walking30 in cottage country

My very favorite time of year is the autumn.  There is no better time to appreciate the fall than the next few weeks while the colors are so vibrant.  If you haven't had the chance you should make a date with yourself to go out into the country and check out the color.  We were lucky these past few days to get a chance to vist with friends and family and just walk in the woods.  There is nothing better than the fresh air and beautiful scenery.

Thanksgiving weekend gives us the gift of another day to just relax and enjoy a walk ... hope you had a good one today!

Day 5 and 6 Be Thankful!

Artist's Around the Sound Studio Tour

Day 5 and 6 Be Thankful!

Day 5 ... I didn't get to my blog yesterday because I couldn't get connected online.  It is tough when traveling to be able to have the whole computer connection be dependable.  I did walk30 and I was lucky enough to walk down the Bruce Trail with my friend Elaine!!  We had a long day getting her art show together but it was all worth it when we were done. (pictures coming).
Day 6 ... my walk30 had to wait until the Art Show had begun and I had driven a little further down the road to  have Thanksgiving dinner with family at a cottage on the Georgian Bay.  After an amazing dinner we walked under the stars to make the day complete.
I am thankful for my family, for my friends and for my good health ... that are you thankful for?

Day 4 Get out there and walk30

This is one of my very favorite paintings by Elaine Davidson

Day 4 Get out there and walk30

Today walking was a bit of a challenge ... I was working on a report and it seemed that the longer I worked on it the longer it became. It was just one of those busy days.  I am working hard to get things done because tomorrow I want to leave early to head out to Owen Sound and visit with and help my artist friend Elaine Davidson. She is one of the Artists Around the Sound and will be on the Artist Studio Tour on Saturday and Sunday along with her husband Uwe .... who is also an artist.
This is a weekend I look forward to all year. When we are excited and rushing it seems that the thing that gets left behind is often one of the fundamentals like ... getting out there for a simple walk that could clear your head and make you feel just that much better!
I did make it out to walk and I will be ready to go tomorrow morning bright and early!
If you are anywhere near Owen Sound on Saturday be sure to take in the Artists Around the Sound Studio Tour and Sale ... you won't regret it!

Day 3 Dancing60 was fun!

It doesn't matter how you move ... just move!

Day3 Dancing60 was fun!

Some of you may know that I teach a wild dance class called A Chance to Dance.  We are in our third week and it is the best possible therapy that I know of!   I just encourage everyone to wiggle and jiggle their worries away and they are all fairly willing to enjoy this dancing fun. Today I was walking in many different ways ... at dance class, at Curves for a workout and just on the street from place to place.   I definitely had a day filled with movement and it did the trick.
I hope everyone had a move your body day too!

Day Two Walking 30 makes a difference

It takes a group!

Day Two  Walking 30 makes a difference

So much of what we do has to do with walking: the Walk On Strong group walks, the other walking groups, the race committee, the Trillium grant and the Minds in Motion event itself.  It seems that things in our lives just revolve around the idea that fitness is just a walk away and that everyone has access to this idea.
Tonight we were involved in a focus group made up of some of the dedicated members of our race committee.  We were exploring the impact that all of these elements have on us and other members of the community.  It is always interesting to get people together to share their thoughts because as a collective so much more is revealed.  It was invigorating to hear what everyone had to say and I feel as though it gives me fuel to carry on.
I guess I am saying thank you to all who have been a part of this journey ... all of those who have helped us to help others ... we do make a difference and it is easier when you have company!

Day One Just walk out the door!

Day One ... Just head out the door

Day One Just walk out the door!

I spent a lot of the day sitting and working on my computer.  It is truly amazing when you have one of those sit down days how easy it is to NOT log many steps.  I wanted to be sure to get some movement in today over and above my walk30 and my super good friend Ellace helped me out.  She told me that she was going to go to Curves today to start a 30 day trial and I decided to go along with her.  Curves is a great place to get a strength training routine started in your life.  We all need to build muscle and keep it and I have been missing out on strength training lately so ... off we went to Curves this morning.

I am committed to the first 30 days and we will see where this leads but I have to say it felt good to spend some time working specific muscle groups on the machines and doing a little aerobic work on the platforms. Actually one of the best things about Curves is that it is a 30 minute workout and you get a chance to work all of the muscle groups that will keep you strong and healthy. It is a quick solution to weight training and pretty social too!

Later in the day I headed out the door with Annie in tow to make my walk30 a reality ... all in all I feel as if I have had a great Day one!
I hope you did too.
