Watch this awesome Canada Please rap ...
makes me proud to be CANADIAN!!

Day 30 The July Walk30 Canada Challenge starts!

Today's walk was perfect.  An early morning and a clear blue sunny sky ... there was a big group out this morning for both the 5K and the 14K walk and it was inspiring to see so many walking along the streets this morning ... especially on the Canada weekend.
We had another walk with our puppy Annie this evening amid the neighborhood fireworks. We are warming up for the big day tomorrow.  Canada celebrates her birthday well ... I am starting out my July walk30 Challenge with an early morning walk tomorrow.

I hope you decide to join me and walk 30 minutes a day for the month of July ... it will help you get ready for the Minds in Motion K W Walking Classic on September 23.

Day 29 Just a walk30 day!

One of my favorite walks ... ever ... in Florence Italy

Day 29 Just a walk30 day!
Today was busy and hot!  We had a walk with Dave's Mom late this afternoon and then headed home for another walk around the neighborhood.  Even on a busy day we have to find time to get out there and walk and some walks are all about connecting with the people that you care about.  Walking truly makes a difference.
That's it for today.

Day 28 Your 4th Half Marathon! Well done

A half marathon a week ... you can do it by walking30 every day!

Day 28 Your 4th Half Marathon! Well done

Yes!! If you have been walking30 this month of June you have just finished your 4th half marathon.  Only 30 minutes a day which will take you approximately 3K down the road and if you walk every day for 7 days you clock 21K on those feet of yours (probably more!). So every 7 days you can count on one more half marathon and you just finished day 28 ... I have done the math for you and I am very proud.

It's now time to think about the WALK30 Challenge for July ... the Canada Day commitment.  Just promise yourself that you can get out the door and walk for 30 minutes for 30 days. If you have done it for June ... why not July.

Let me know if you intend to join me walking a half marathon each and every week by walking30 every day. Leave a comment or email me at www.walkonstrong@gmail.com.

It has been as hot as can be again today ... so we just finished our walk30 in the cool of the evening.

Hope you had a chance to walk30 today!

Day 27 Warm-up for walkers

Day 27 Warm-up for walkers!

One of my favorite magazines is Prevention. They have lots of relevant, up to date information for keeping yourself healthy and fit and they keep it simple.  They are also big fans of WALKING and promote walking, walking communities and walker friendly events in their magazine on a regular basis.
I just got an email from Prevention and there was a very good video with an effective warm-up for walkers.
I had the very best walk30 today ... it was a walking meeting with one of the wonderful people I am working with on our research project.  Instead of sitting in the office we headed off down the road ... it was a great meeting and a great walk ... can't beat it!!

Day 26 You CAN walk a half marathon!

Day 26 You CAN walk a half marathon!

YES!! You can walk a half marathon (21 Kilometers) and I think that if you were to choose the Minds in Motion K W Walking Classic you would have the time to train over the next 13 weeks to do it within our 4 hour limit.  It seems like a daunting task but if you just a little distance each and every week ... you will be there before you know it.
Let's look at how fast you would have to walk each kilometer to get that done.  To get a feel for what a your minute per kilometer pace is you would make sure you had a place to walk that you knew was 1 kilometer and then just time yourself walking that distance.

Half Marathon Paces minutes per Kilometer to finish in:

7 min per K Pace  = 2 hours 27 minutes           10.5 min per K Pace  = 3 hours 40 minutes
7.5 min per K Pace  = 2 hours 37 minutes        11 min per K Pace  = 3 hours 51 minutes
8 min per K Pace  = 2 hours 48 minutes
8.5 min per K Pace  = 2 hours 59 minutes
9 min per K Pace  = 3 hours 9 minutes
9.5 min per K Pace  = 3 hours  20 minutes
10 min per K Pace  = 3 hours 30 minutes

If you think that a 21 K might be just a little too long we have a 5K and a 10 K race that you could try out this year.
I am going to post a training plan here on my blog and at the website for the race at www.kwwalkingclassic.com.
We would love to have you walking with us, getting healthier and helping us raise funds to make a difference in someone's life that is recovering from mental health concerns.
That has got to feel good!
If you register right away you could be the lucky registrant that wins a Blackberry Playbook!

Day 25 Power Walking Workshop

Walk On Strong evening workshop

Day 25 Power Walking Workshop

Dave and I were lucky enough to have been host to a group of wonderful women that will be training for the Minds in Motion K W Walking Classic half marathon over the summer months.  They are all looking to improve their technique, fitness, speed and endurance.  They were also a group that seemed to have a great time walking together. That is always the most important part of walking.
We started off with an hour of basic training and then after a little talking went out to talk about how to tackle hills.
Thank you to all who attended ... Dave and I were inspired by your dedication and enthusiasm for walking!
Keep walking on strong!

Day 24 Walk30 with someone every day!

Day 24 Walk30 with someone every day

Nothing is better than getting out there with a spouse, friend or just about anyone that you can talk your way around the block with.
We had four new people out at our Walk On Strong group on Saturday ... 3 out of the four had recently moved to our area and were getting to know new people and the area by joining our group and walking around uptown Waterloo.  What a great way to get to know people and to orient yourself to a new community.  I remember when we moved here from Thunder Bay over 25 years ago one of the first things I did was go to the YMCA and take the fitness instructor course.  I really didn't think I would become a fitness instructor ... I just wanted to know more about how to stay fit and I wanted to meet people.  Within a year I was teaching classes at the Y and I knew a lot more people ... participants in my classes and fellow instructors.
Get out there and walk30 every day .. and take someone with you ... it is another example of walking magic.
Hope you had a great walk30 today!

Day 23 A beautiful day to walk!

Day 23 A beautiful day to walk!

This morning we had a huge group of walkers out on the University trail with both groups!  What a clear blue sky and the temperature was cooperating to make it the perfect walking weather. We saw 3 hawks while walking on the path this morning  ... an added bonus.  My camera does not do them justice that's for sure.
Thanks to all who came out today!

Day 22 Just add Strength training

If you can't climb a hill stairs will do

Day 22 Just add strength training

Here is a great little article about some very basic, simple moves that you can add to your day and increase your strength at the same time. 5 Quick One-Minute Workouts
There is a lot more information at www.fitandfabliving.com
There are some excellent suggestions like taking the stairs at every opportunity. Stair climbing, just like climbing hills, builds your muscle, breath and stamina.
They also have a great ab move that only takes a few minutes but really gets deep into the abdominals quickly.  Strong abs help to protect your lower back.
Be sure to check the link above and even if you try out a few of those moves it will help you do your walk30 with a little more muscle.

It was a great day for a walk30 ... so much cooler! If you live close please come and walk with us tomorrow morning.

Day 21 You have just completed 3 Half Marathons!!

The Sleeping Giant in Thunder Bay Harbour ... Summer2011

Day 21 You have just completed 3 Half Marathons!!

If you are walking30 for June and you have walked every day I want you to stop and think about what you have accomplished so far.
If you walk for 30 minutes you are walking approximately 3 K and if you do that every day ( lets do the math) 3 times 7 equals 21 ... you are walking 21 K each and every week!!
In 21 days you have walked 3 half marathons ... that's right THREE!  Give yourself a pat on the back ... that is impressive.  I am proud of you!
Keep on walking30 because you will be chalking up another half marathon before we are done.
Make sure you check out this great information about  Walking in hot weather at www.about.com.  We have been having a real hot spell here in southern Ontario and we all need to walk smart and keep ourselves hydrated and protected from the sun.
Hope you had a great walk30 today.

Day 20 Summer is almost here

Just a beautiful day!

Day 20 Summer is almost here
It is definitely looking and feeling like summer in southern Ontario.  It was 34 degrees Centigrade today and everyone is talking about the warm weather.  It was not the ideal day to take off for a walk30 but if you waited until the sun went down you probably got it in.
Today was the final Chance To Dance Class and there were a few brave dancers out tonight in the hot gym ... and it was fun.
After class we went out to walk30 with our puppy Annie ... and she was happy to get out the door that's for sure.
All in all it was a great day ... hope you had a good walk30 too!

Day 19 Getting out the door just gets easier

Just one step ... that is all it takes!

Day 19 Getting out the door just gets easier

I am wondering if you have noticed that getting out there for your walk30 is getting easier?  When I first started this challenge I was worried that it would be just a real struggle to make myself walk every day.  At first it definitely took a bit of mental trickery to make it happen.  I don't know whether I have mentioned it but I have a rebel that is quite strong when I don't want to do something ... no matter how good it is for me.  As the days and weeks and months have rolled on I am finding it easier and easier to make my walk happen.  I know when my day begins that there will be a walk30 ( or more ) that will be part of my day ... no matter what.

Today was a busy day and I was at the Annual General Meeting for Waterloo Regional Homes for Mental Health ... a wonderful organization.  When I got home Dave and I headed out the door into the warm evening air to walk30 around the neighborhood.  There wasn't any debating or excuses ... we just set out to walk and that just felt good!

I hope you had a great walk30!

Day 18 Weekly Walking News

Walking on Strong!

Day 18 Weekly Walking News

One of the things that I have found is that, by far, the very best motivator for me to exercise is to be totally committed to helping or connecting with others in your fitness routine.
In years past that meant that I would have 2 or 3 fitness classes per week that I taught at AR Kaufman family YMCA.  I had to be there because I was the instructor and people would be waiting for me in the gym or pool for an aerobics class, in the studio for strength training or in the group cycling room for a spin.  The bottom line was that I was there because I had committed to be the leader.
Over the past 6 or 7 years ( I am losing track ) Dave and I have had the great honor of leading the training sessions at the Running Room for a few years and then moving on to this Walk On Strong group that meets at the Waterloo Public Square.
We have met some of the most amazing individuals, people that we would never had met otherwise.    At the same time we have been blessed with a reason to get out the door, lead the groups and keep ourselves and others healthier.
Having this group to meet on Tuesday evenings and  Saturday mornings keeps us active.  I am always amazed at how committed others are to this group and how people improve their fitness, and become involved in goals and fitness challenges like the Minds in Motion K W Walking Classic coming up in September.
If you don't live close enough to join us I would suggest starting your own little group that meets at a certain time every week.
If you do live close come and join us this week!

Day 17 Walking30 on King Street Waterloo

Annie at the Open Street event! ...even the dogs had fun!!

Day 17 Walking on King Street Waterloo ... Open Streets Event today

We went walking down King Street for the first Open Streets event of the year today!  We took our puppy Annie and joined the other families walking on the avenue without the hindrance of any cars ... it was great.  It was threatening rain today so I think that the numbers were a bit smaller that what would be expected but it was nice to just wander along and across King Street and enjoy all of the events that were organized for the afternoon.  The Public Square had a entertainment and there were other groups with all kinds of interesting presentations to enjoy.
Come on down to King Street for the next Open Streets Event on July 22 ... we will be there promoting the K W Walking Classic race.
For more information about the Open Streets Uptown Waterloo events this summer and fall check out the link.

Day 16 10 K Walk On Strong

Pictures from our Saturday Walk On Strong 10K

Day 16 10 K Walk On Strong

The distance is nothing; it is only the first step that is difficult.
Marie de Vichy-Chamrond, the Marquise du Deffand (1697 - 1780)

This quote is such a powerful statement and it is the foundation of walk30.  The idea behind walk30 is the momentum to take the first step, to move ahead and take the action that will bring a better quality to your life.  If we can simply move outside ... take the first step ... we can do the distance what ever that may be.
Today a member of our group did her very first 10 K walk ... it was an event  that I wouldn't have missed and I was honored to walk every step.   Sometimes it is easy to forget how important it is to just take that first step.  It is truly magical if you just venture out!
Congratulations to Deb!

Day 16 The day someone walked over Niagara Falls

Grand River Walk30!

Day 16 The day someone walked over Niagara Falls

Today started with my weight watchers meeting ... I did a little talk about adding a little more muscle to your walk and I got to share some of my walking tips with the wonderful people who were at the meeting this morning.  I can't tell you how great it was to hear that there are others who are walking30 with me and feeling the benefit!  Thank you for the great feedback.
If anyone has a story or a comment about the difference getting out there every day is making in your life please leave a comment or just email me at walkonstron@gmail.com.  I would love to hear from you.
Our walk today was through the woods along the Grand River ... it was shady and cool and our dog Annie loved it.
The day ended with a trip to Stratford and a wonderful play ... The Matchmaker ... it was one of the best plays that we have seen there and we have been going for many years.
When we got home we watched the video of Nik Wallenda walking across Niagara Falls ... talk about a walk30!!  Actually it took him a little over 25 minutes but I think that we will give him a break ... all considered. WOW!
Time for bed ... the end of an inspiring day ... Walk On Strong,

Day14 It's all about the food!

Yum Yum Yum!!

Day14 It's all about the food!

I have noticed that with all this walking every day it seems a little easier to keep my weight stable.  That being said it is still challenging to not over eat or slip into some old habits that tend to put the weight on.  I think that we really have to be easier on ourselves and at the same time keep making the effort to use portion control and a daily walk30 (or more) to keep us honest.

Once in a while we do have to treat ourselves and today was one of those days for me. My friend Ellace and I were treated to lunch in downtown Toronto at the Holt Renfrew cafe.  I had a BLT salad and it was ... incredible!!  The picture above does not do it justice believe me. I kept thinking that I should stop eating because I should be full ... but it just tasted too good! I gave in and just cleaned up my plate.  Once in a while it is just fine to eat a little too much.  When I got home I just made sure that I got out the door for my walk30.
Hope you had a great one today!

Day 13 A Birthday walk30

A walk and a glass of champagne ... the best!

Day 13 A Birthday walk30

Yes! today is my birthday ... for about 15 more minutes anyway. I love birthdays even though it does mean that I am getting older ... well that is just to be expected.  The important thing is to stay young in your body and your mind.  Today I walked30 and I danced my butt off at A Chance To Dance class.

It is my goal to do something physical on my birthday to just feel fit and alive.  When I was teaching at the YMCA I made my way there on the big day and if I wasn't teaching a class I would be taking one.  I think that I have maintained this habit for over 25 years.

It is all about pushing ourselves to get out there ... make a goal for yourself and stick to it in the best way possible.  We only have one life to live let's give it our best.

I spent a long time on itunes choosing songs for the dance class that meant a lot to me.  The class was a blast and I felt like a million dollars sharing it with a room full of inspired individuals.  I am grateful for life today ... it is something I hope to carry into tomorrow.

Day 12 Walk a Half Marathon

Day 12   Walk a Half Marathon ... you can do it!

The great thing about having a goal is that you have something to shoot for. Whether it is a 5K, a 10K or 21 K there is something about having that race ahead of you that gets you out the door.
A goal is a wonderful thing ... I hope that you consider our event as a potential personal goal ... you won't regret it.
I was out the door 4 times today for various purposes which included exercising the dog.
Hope you had a great walk30 too!

Day 11 Making the walk30 happen

We just have to find a way to get out the door.

Day 11 Making the walk30 happen
I think that my friend Elaine has the right idea for her walk30 habit.  On most days she gets out in the morning and just gets it done.
Today ended up being a busy day and just before I headed out to a dinner meeting I called my neighbor and asked her if she would like to go for a walk30.  It is amazing how fast the day flies by so you really need to make a plan to get out the door!
An early morning walk is such a great way to activate your mind and body!
Hope you all made it out there for your walk30!

Day 9 Walking in the rain ... advice

Another rainy Saturday Morning (2011!)

Day 9 Walking in the rain ... About.com has advice

I am a huge fan of   the About.com Walking Guide and after getting soaked in a very rainy walk this morning I was inspired and informed by her article from October 20, 2011.
giving lots of advice around How to walk in the rain.   You can connect with the page at about.com at the this link and I urge you to do it because there are more links to endless information about walking.
Here is a sample The information below is from:

How to Walk in the Rain

It's Not All Wet

By , About.com Guide

Rain Walking Tip #1: Umbrellas

Some walking purists think that umbrellas are for standers, not for walkers. I don't commonly carry an umbrella (and I walk in rainy Oregon), but under some conditions I use one as the best gear for the day.
  • Umbrellas are best in moderately hard rain where even with waterproof gear, you couldn't keep the rain out.

  • Umbrellas are poor in windy conditions, often resulting in a broken umbrella.

  • Lightweight, collapsible umbrellas can be carried in your hip pack or in your hand.

  • Useful to have if you need to defend against a dog attack. If the umbrella is unopened and the dog is charging you, opening it in his face can startle and distract the dog from the attack, as it faces an unexpectedly enlarged opponent.

  • Practical experience shows that carrying an umbrella on a 10K volkssport walk results in the showers holding off until after the walk a good percentage of the time. Rain showers prefer to rain on those who don't carry umbrellas.

  • If walking with a partner, either both should have an umbrella or neither, to reduce conflict.

  • Take care when passing others that you don't poke them with the umbrella, whether furled or unfurled. I have often been menaced by a wicked-looking stick umbrella jauntily carried on someone's shoulder and swinging around unconcerned for those in the vicinity.

  • After the walk, set the opened umbrella to dry in a warm area before rolling it up, to prevent mildew.
If it's raining where you are make sure you don't let it dampen your enthusiasm for walking30!
Walk On Strong ... rain or shine!

Day 8 Walking the dog

Walking Annie in the woods today ... beautiful!

Day 8 Walking the dog

Some days are simply a walk in the park ... and then there are all the other days that might be a little more challenging.  Today was actually one of those challenging days but in the end it was a walk in the park that saved it.
A walk30 doesn't have to be complicated and can be a great way to make a day better, clear your head and lighten up the load.
Hope you had a great walk30 today.

We had our last workshop tonight ... we went for a walk and then celebrated  all of our success with a little food and drink.  It is all about the celebration of these accomplishments.

What a wonderful group of walkers!! Thank you to everyone for your dedication.  The Moon In June 5K goal race was a huge success for all and we were so proud of everyone.  We are gearing up for the next session that will take us into September 23rd and the Minds In Motion event.

I put together three walks to do my walk30 today ... and they were all good!

Hope your June Walk30 Challenge is going well.

Day 6 Dancing30

Dance30 ... it is an option on a rainy day!

Day 6 Dancing30
Wednesdays are dancing days for me and today I did my steps in dance class. If you feel like the rain is keeping you from heading out the door and you want to get your walk30 done then just put on the music and keep your feet moving for 30 minutes.  It will feel good ... trust me.
Tonight the stormy skies didn't keep some dedicated dancers away from A Chance To Dance class ... the thunder was booming but we got a chance to move and groove.
Thanks to all who made it out.
Take care and Walk On Strong!

Day 5 The best walking shoe

My New Balance 860's I love them!

Day 5 The best walking shoe
I was browsing through my fitness newsletters and found this article in  Fitness Magazine  .
This New Balance shoe was voted the very best shoe for walkers.  I am a HUGE fan of New Balance shoes because they understand power walkers and make the shoes to fit what we are doing. I am going to write a blog entry soon about the lastest New Balance shoes that I have been test driving ... but until then take a moment to check out this review.

The Best Walking ShoeThe Winner is the New Balance 895

For casual strollers to serious power walkers                              Bye-bye, staid walking shoes. This bold "superlight" pair is "incredibly flexible, while being supportive and cushiony," testers say. The unique egg-crate-inspired design of the outsole "puts an extra spring in your step." That, combined with a stable-but-not-stiff foam midsole, makes them "well built for both casual and speed walking."
I was out walking with the Walk On Strong group for my walk30 tonight.  It was just a perfect evening for a walk ... thanks to all who were there.
Walk On Strong,
Sue

Day 3 Weight Watchers WALK-!T Challenge today

Congratulations to all who came out to the Weight Watchers WALK-!T Challenge this morning

Day 3 Weight Watchers WALK-!T Challenge today

So up early again today and off to the Running Room for the 5K Weight Watchers event!

There were lots of keen walkers out this morning to enjoy the weather.  It was a little cooler but the perfect temperature for a fitness walk30 ( or so). The sky was stormy but the rain held off and I was very impressed with the numbers considering that it definitely looked like there might be rain this morning. We headed in to Waterloo Park for the start and did two - 2 and a half Kilometer loops of the park.

It was 32 years ago that I first became a Weight Watchers member  and I got to my goal weight became a lifetime member within a year.   Ever since then I get back there when my weight is heading up and my waist is getting bigger.  It is a great way to keep on top of a healthy eating plan and stay accountable.
Sometimes it gets overwhelming when we are making an attempt to stay on track ... it's good to know your not the only one and that there is help along the way.
A huge thank you to the Running Room and the Weight Watchers for providing this free venue for an awesome walk!!

Day 2 Moon In June race tonight

Erica, Cynthia, Debbie, Sue and Dave. We are missing Michael in this picture ... he was still warming up for the race.

Day 2 Moon In June race tonight

What a great day ... a walk with the group in the morning and the Moon in June race in the evening.
Our Walk On Strong group had a good showing at the Burlington event ... everyone did so well!!
Dave was second male walker in the race and Michael was third ... Erica was 3rd in her age group in her very first race ever! Cynthia and Debbie both were strong right until the finish ...well done!!
I was happy with my time and finished third in my age group.

That's it for now because I have to get up and do the Weight Watchers 5K Challenge walk early tomorrow morning!
More news on that tomorrow ... Walk On Strong!

Day 1 Walk30 challenge begins!

Another stormy day!

Day 1 Walk30 challenge begins!
Day one began with an extra challenge ... it was pouring down rain all day ... I mean REALLY raining. We do need rain but on the first day of your brand new June Walk30 Challenge it was just a bit challenging to say the least.
I personally just finished my walk30 in the rain with an hour to spare before midnight.  I was holding out today waiting for a clear moment ... there were a few but very few.
Tomorrow looks a little more promising with only a 40% chance of showers for the whole day and evening. We are heading to Burlington to the Moon In June race tomorrow evening.

I hope you all managed to get out there today!
Please drop me a note at walkonstrong@gmail.com and let me know that you are walking30!
